i'm matthew

I come from Devon, England where many generations of my family have farmed the land since the early 18th century. Over the years I have been an architectural technician, university lecturer and a disability support worker. Presently I'm a webmaster for Panasonic living in south Wales with my fiancé.

In brief

I have spent most of my life living and working in Devon. My secondary education was at St. Boniface's Roman Catholic College. From the Summer of 2000 I spent over five years working at Crowe Caylor & Partners as an Architectural Technician; during which time I attained architectural related qualifications.

In 2005 I left Devon to study a degree in Internet & Multimedia Technology at the University of Wales, Newport. After completing my degree I lectured at the university for two years. Between lecturing, I worked with students needing support due to physical or learning difficulties. Both jobs gave me great satisfaction though at times the workload was a little daunting!

In 2010 I left the university and started working for Panasonic as a webmaster for ten EU sites in six languages.

Outside of work I love to spend time with my fiancé exploring new places and photographing the world around me. I enjoy hiking, ice skating, geocaching and generally being outdoors. I play the piano, like to paint and get a buzz from making things. Cooking is cool though something I'd like to be better at.

Most of the time I am quiet and hard working, though I do have my moments. I enjoy listening to pretty much any music; have a witty sense of humour; and like to make people laugh. I have a big heart and am very trusting and caring; take people at face value; and always make time for others.

work

Read a little about the work I do currently, as well as what I have done in the past. Also learn what it is I hope for from the future.

Currently

Webmaster at Panasonic
July 2010 onwards

Working at Panasonic I am responsible for the consumer and dealer websites for business product categories including security, telephone, office, medical and educational solutions. These sites and the main product database need maintaining in six languages for ten countries across Europe.

Site furniture is either created in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Flash. Flash banners will make use of ActionScript for animation rather than timelined events; and text is parsed from XML feeds to ease the process of translating content into multiple languages.

Bespoke portal/partner sites are created and maintained within Adobe Business Catalyst coding pages in XHTML, CSS. JavaScript and jQuery are used to enhance the user experience and to interact with BC modules for advanced functionality.

Last year I wrote the front-end of a DVD sent out to European dealers using XHTML and CSS with JavaScript parsing XML data within dynamic pages.

In a perfect world

As much as I love the people I work with, the perfect job for me does not exist within Panasonic. It must be out there and should it come into my sights I'd be silly to miss out! My ideal job would be to develop web based systems using PHP for an employer willing to take me on with my current skill set and give not only training but the potential to grow. Junior or graduate roles appeal to me very much as I feel this level best reflects my overall skills with PHP.

Should you have or know of any oppertunities then please feel free to get in touch.

the world through my lens

My first memories of photography come from when my family went to London in the 1980's. My sister and I each had a disposable coca-cola camera which didn't even have an optical viewfinder - just a little flip up window for framing the shot. I didn't know what framing a photograph meant; I probably didn't have a clue what a camera was to be honest. I remember like it was yesterday, climbing to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral and looking down over London, looking through that square hole, and pressing that big button on the top.
