This may be more interesting than hearing something about my day at work...

Ever heard rap artists talk about 'haters' in their lyrics? Well if I was a rap artist then I'd do the same thing. Sadly, I have two haters, the most recent one confirmed a week or two ago - I don't care to remember exactly when it was now. The first hater is a pathetic looser, who had to make up his own reality to give himself a reason to hate me. Not going to give him the time here - he's not worth it. This new hater, however, hates me out of a need to feel like he has a purpose in life; something to live for. His own words. I find this both frightening and yet, extremely intriguing at the same time. What makes someone be that way?

Towards the end of December 2003, this chap was irritating me with questions surrounding the Desktop Composition Engine, DCE, a component of Microsoft's next generation operating system, codenamed Windows "Longhorn". While not a lot is really known about DCE, I shot myself in the foot by going public with my abilities in coding for this new technology and so he was one of many others expecting me to answer every little quandary. On the 3rd of January I couldn't take much more grilling from the code kiddies, so I wrote a basic article to give them a start and keep them off my back. They loved it. Peace reigned.

Having no real reason to ask me more questions, this chap decided to start making strange comments about my wife ((who is nothing more than a figment of his imagination seeing I'm not married)) and how he knew where I lived. After telling him I didn't like what he was saying, I blocked and removed him from my MSN list. No big deal, end of story. Any looser that really wants to find out my address could do so easily, no thanks to the NIC.

My Hotmail account, which exists purely for when I register on forums, was soon flooded with emails and PM notifications from the various forums I am registered at, to which he was also a member. All the messages were from him. He was pleading with me not to shut him out of his life, as if we knew each other or something. Anyhow, I ignored all of this, much to his displeasure, so he posted a public message threatening to come over and beat me with a hammer. I let him know what I thought about this and generally suggested he grew up, got a grip on reality and left me alone.

The apology came a few weeks later. Would have meant something if he hadn't started to blame other people for his actions. For what it was worth, I accepted his apology, though declined his suggestion we went back to how things were before all this happened. Sorry but before all this happened; he was just some kid asking stupid questions all day long. I can live without that, thank you. Afterwards, there was no more to be seen of him. All was good. Then two weeks ago I was again threatened, on another public message board. The administration at the board, decided he'd gone too far and as had happened at the other forum, they came down on him like a tonne of bricks. I was then introduced to something I'd never known about before.

Fake-death.

I often browse around technical forums, though they're mostly full of rubbish from people who like to think they know something about anything. I rarely post, unless I'm feeling bored and somehow managed to become a moderator of a few of these boards - thanks to my posting style and general helpfulness ((even when I'm being critical)). What worries me most of all, is that the age of folks in these forums is usually between thirteen and sixteen years. Obviously this leads to a lot of immature kiddie stuff, which explains my facial expression while browsing them.

So fake-death quite simply is the chap I've been talking about above, deciding that he has killed himself by jumping into his car and driving at speed into oncoming traffic. He pretends to be his brother, who wants to make it very clear this has just happened and that it was probably due to some guy named CDog. That's me by the way. Then his best friend joins in. I decided it was best to ignore this as I did not believe it was true and was certain this had been set up to get back at me. To start with, people who not being global moderators like me, couldn’t see the IPs of these people were all the same, believed the story. Only later did people begin to question what they were being told. In-fighting broke out between people who believed and those who did not. I lost interest and stopped reading the posts and my only comments were to the Administrator, who didn't believe it either. I mean, if my sister died, the last thing I'd do would be to go onto her computer, register on the same forums as her and post about it ((we'll ignore the fact she lives 280 miles away and I really wouldn't want to sign up on the forums she uses)). Besides, the chap who had fake-died was thirteen according to all his profiles on the web so wouldn't have a car; his fake-brother claimed to be his psychiatrist, yet couldn't spell psychiatrist and was posting around the boards like nothing had happened; and his fake-friend who worked with the guy at his fake-place of work ((unless he was a slave-child?)) had written that he lived in the United Sates of America - so how the two of them could work together in Australia was beyond anyone's guess. Typo? Unlikely. The three of them had the exact same IP as did a further two other accounts on the forum and to top it off, members of the board were reporting that they had been chatting with the guy on MSN.

It must be tough trying to remember that you have died.

It was all wrapped up and put to rest when someone posted a confessional letter, where, as I had said near the start of this letter, he confirmed this was all done out of his dire need to hate me. The letter went on to express how it gave him purpose to his day and he'd even made, so he said, his own parody of my website called wehatematthewcornish.org which to be honest, if it ever existed, I'd love to see. He went on about what a jerk he thought I was and made his defences - including how he and his fake-friend had printed out all of the threads, posts and emails and had been having a good laugh over them. After going on a bit more and giving everyone no doubt that he had a screw or two loose, he apologised and asked to be let back on the forums.

Five accounts with his IP were deleted and a whole IP range blocked, affecting a further two member accounts. I've had the pleasure not to have heard anything from him since. The issue has been forgotten about ((two weeks is a long time in Internet terms)) and the kiddies are fighting over other stuff now. Nothing changes...
