The Bank
There's a pub in Plymouth called The Bank. Well now we've broken the ice, I'll briefly mention my bank, Natwest and the meeting I was called in for today...
Was probably two weeks ago when I received a phone call from Natwest, inviting me to see my manager with a view to discussing my account and seeing if they could give me more money. Why not? So today was the day. I left the office and drove off to the bank, managing to be totally bewildered by the new road layout in the totally demolished area of Plymouth City Centre. It's a shock to see all those familiar buildings gone - not that I'll miss them mind. Ugly things! I got to the bank at 1500 and when I finally got to the reception desk, was invited to wait to see the manager for this chat.
To be honest I was expecting to see the woman I've seen in the past, however to my pleasant surprise, she had been replaced by a much younger, more attractive lady called Lisa. Sadly the pleasant surprises stopped there because she had not discovered I'm really a millionaire. She asked a few questions, made a few comments about how it was good I had been paying off my credit card, and that seemed to be it. Turns out that last month she had the pain of her car MOT and insurance to deal with, though I'm sure she earns a tad more than I do.
Anywho, having mentioned I'd be leaving employment to go to University next year, she told me about the student accounts. They have all the features of my gold account, without fees and an interest free overdraft facility. I asked if my student status with the Higher National course I'm doing made me legible for this and sure enough, it did. I had my student ID card in my coat so was able to use that as proof of being a student and after a few minutes - bingo - my account is now a student account.
This'll save me some money and will run right through until I graduate in 2008. I've never used my overdraft facility because despite it being nice and big, I can't say I'd want to see my bank statement reading minus figures thank you very much. Plus it costs to go into the red, with interest and such, so it was something I steered clear of. That won't be such an issue now it's all interest free but to be frank, it's not really worth the risk of finding yourself stuck in an overdraft...graduating...and having to start paying it back with interest! Brrr...
All in all, it wasn't as pointless as I thought it would be. Last time I was dragged in about the merger between Natwest and The Royal Bank of Scotland which really didn't affect me at all. Plus I got a cup of tea, a chat with a friendly face and a break from the drudgeries of work :).
