Art, Books and Work...
So over the last two weeks I've returned to work. I most certainly could have done with another week off, having not really found myself actually feeling as though I was on holiday in the first place. Nonetheless, the routine of my employment has come back into full swing and yet another year brings more of the same old story. Clients chasing with complaints that promises the drawings would be with them next week were made two months ago. Typical result of poor time management by the partner in question - I was on holiday when the promise was made and when the deadline passed. No way in hell were those drawings ever to have materialised. I have still to be asked to do them. For now I have other work to get on with.
This Wednesday I was left feeling a little downhearted. One of our clients has purchased a large property were a group of Polish men, twelve in total, reside in what I think is a shelter for refugees. I'm not 100% certain. What I do know, however, is that these poor guys, some of whom I met on Wednesday though they speak little to no English, are due to be kicked out of their home. I was there to survey the property with a view to redeveloping it as apartments. There are more profits to be had in apartments than housing refugees. Pure economics. I just hope they have somewhere to go to and that if they don't, the client has difficulty sleeping.
This year I've been, as one person put it, reading for Britain. There are some folks who'll read two books a week, so I seem quite slow in comparison but two weeks in I've nearly finished my second novel. As part of my mission to read all of John Grisham's books, I've read The Rainmaker and am currently finishing off The Runaway Jury. Previously I've read The Firm, The Summons, The Pelican Brief and The Partner.
I love these books and the issue has become one of not being able to put them down. As a fan of John Grisham, it's easy for me to say this but his books really are difficult to stop reading. You've just got to keep turning those pages! As such, I've soon found myself reading very late into the early hours of the morning. The resulting early morning fights with my alarm clock, the desire for sleep, and a need to get into work on time are starting to take their toll on me. I'm exhausted. I'm the type of person who needs a good nights sleep...but hey, it has meant my relationship with the other partner has strengthened - as he too is a huge fan of these books. Very cool.
My new camera arrived this Monday. Yup, I went ahead and bought myself a Nikon CoolPix 5400 and I'm very pleased with it. This is the same camera I use at work and it was released about eighteen months ago. I know how to work it so it made sense to buy one for myself - seeing as that for work purposes, it's overkill on a large scale. Plus I've saved a fortune and really got a good deal - but just how good a deal I got is something I haven't had the heart to tell the office.
As always, you're able to view samples of my work, which now include photographs taken with my new camera, on my deviantART page matthewedwardcornish.deviantart.com.
Off to bed to read me thinks! I'll post more tomorrow - kinda neglected this thing of late.
